Bungie apparently helped design the PS4 controller

"One has to wonder how long the partnership has been going on. Did Bungie plan to hop right into bed with Sony the minute it changed its Facebook status to "single"? Or is it a more recent fling?"

Thats great. My only question is who was in charge of the analog stick rubber coating?. My awesome DS4 doesn't look as great with the left rubber missing.

RogueCheddar4019d ago

lol unfortunately this may never be answered

GarrusVakarian4019d ago (Edited 4019d ago )

It won't be answered, unfortunately. Sony recalled the controllers and replaced them with revised versions without speaking a word about it.

On topic: I'm glad the DS4 is so great with first person shooters. I would have hated to have gone this entire gen with a controller the same as DS3. The handles, the triggers, the resistance in the sticks. All perfect for FPS's, im glad it got revised.

UltraNova4018d ago (Edited 4018d ago )

DS4 is two steps ahead of DS3, its that much better! The sticks are super sensitive, the triggers are weighted just right, the increased width and thickness is welcome in my mits as well.

Out of Topic: Now if only Sony and Bungie agreed to an exclusive game for the ps4...I would like them to make something similar to Mass effect only bigger badder and better in every way!

Imagine the possibilities...

crxss4018d ago (Edited 4018d ago )

Triggers are a big improvement but still not as good as Xbox One's. I wish Somy came out with a version of the DS4 with impulse triggers. It's sad but the prototype DS4 had better triggers than the DS4 we have now. I tested those.

As for the rubber, the retail DS4's rubber material is different than the DS4 that was included with the PS4 so they definitely changed the material.

Volkama4018d ago

I really didn't like the DS3. That was often a deciding factor in which version of a multiplatform game I bought.

Loads of people used to slam the DS3 and there was always this big discussion on how asymetrical sticks are much better than symmetrical, or vice versa.

I always said the symmetry was a red herring, that people pick up on it because it is such a visually obvious difference. The problem was that the sticks were poorly positioned and too loose, not that they were symmetrical. Of course this put me on the wrong side of both factions of the argument lol.

But the DS4 validates what I said completely. It is a great controller, and the sticks are symmetrical.

@JoGam. I don't know why you are getting disagrees but PS4 controller has too major issues to me.
1. Top issue is the robber on the stick
2. Battery life worse than ps3 controller

When i first got my PS4 and people complained about rubber coming off, i was like glad its not me. In a few months tho both my controllers have no rubber left on the left stick and a little bit on the right stick. Its quite annoying but i still try to play with it because i don't feel like spending another 60 on controller. But it would be nice to have a controller that worked really well

iceman064019d ago

Cheaper solution...thumb stick covers. I was worried about this, saying as though I heard many people complain about it, so I purchased a pair for about $6 from Amazon. 1st problem solved. As for the second, I sit fairly close to my PS4 and TV (old habits die hard), so I just tether up.

colonel1794019d ago

1. I think this has already been fixed by Sony.

2. Battery life shouldn't be much of a problem since you can charge the controller when in stand by mode. In my case, I've never play so much that the battery runs out (with the Wii U just a couple of times), but when I am done playing, I just charge them.

With the PS3 was a nuisance because you had to leave your PS3 on to charge them or find other means to do it, and if you forgot, you had to either play plugged or wait few hours until it got charged.

sonarus4019d ago

Thanks for the tip on the thumb stick covers. I heard of those but i haven't tried them out personally and a lot of 3rd party accessories never really work right or feel right so didnt get the covers but assuming it doesnt take away from comfort factor on the controller i will consider it.

@Colonel I didn't even know the controller doesn't charge on standby mode. I have 2 controllers not because i have a lot of 2 player games (I have a few) but primarily because i don't want to have to play my game attached to a wire. So i can always have one ready for play and one on the charger. My issue with the battery really is that it lasts less than PS3 battery. Its like buying a new iphone with battery life worse than the previous one just because it added some new features. They should have at least tried to get the same battery life they had with PS3

0P-Tigrex4019d ago

My Ps4 controller is fine and i've it from Day1. Try not digging into the sticks when you play a game.

rainslacker4018d ago (Edited 4018d ago )

Sony will replace the DS4 for you. Just contact them. It's covered under warranty.

Sony's official statement

:“A very small number of users have reported to us that the rubber surface of their Wireless Controller (DUAKSHOCK®4)’s analogue sticks have torn. Although the rubber material of the analogue sticks fulfils our quality assurance standard, we will inspect individual DUALSHOCK®4 controllers experiencing this symptom, and will replace them with new ones for free as long as they are within the warranty.”

Any PS4 out in the wild will still be under the 1 year warranty, so they can't argue with you there.:)

As far as battery life. Couple options there like a 2nd controller, or replacing the internal battery with a DS3 batter which you can get for around $6 on amazon. Make sure you replace the broken one first though, as replacing the battery will void the warranty.

Phoenix764018d ago

There is a cheap and easy solution to solving your battery issues ppl, it's called a USB extension cable.

SpinalRemains1384018d ago

I haven't had any rubber issues yet, but its very different that I plug my controller into my phones charger when I stop gaming for a few hours

Sy_Wolf4019d ago

Some people just don't take care of their kit. I've never worn out the rubber on the analog stick on any controller I've ever owned. Have a launch Xbox 360 pad in perfect condition.

T24019d ago

Great that's why sony offered to replace them at no charge right? Because you take care of yours /s.
The controller had some issues I replaced two with sticking R1 button right out of the box, I'm sure they will get better

Sy_Wolf4018d ago

@joecanada Somy fixing them for free was a combination of good PR and checking on a potential manufacturing error. It's entirely possible some of the rubber from some of the manufacturers was crappy, but in general people just don't take good care of their expensive electronics. At least not mass consumers. I work in IT, I know. I've cleaned jelly out of $3,000 laptops before.

rainslacker4018d ago

Sony acknowledged the problem, and said they'd replace it under warranty. It's not just some people not taking care of their stuff. The common consensus, although Sony never officially commented, is that they had some bad batches in there that passed their quality assurance.

3-4-54018d ago

Those sticks are the biggest improvement.

Not sure why Sony ever thought floaty sticks were a good idea.

Dat parity...."We're building on all four platforms that we've announced. We have to make sure that [Destiny] is amazing everywhere, especially as a new IP. We have to earn all these fans," Still I enjoyed the alpha looking forward to the Beta next month and full game in September Sonys just boss like that Bungie knows that.

0P-Tigrex4019d ago

Sucks how Bungie is catering to last gen to recoup for development costs. The game would be even better if full optimization was done on next gen consoles. If they would've made it next gen only i feel many people would've made the switch this upcoming september.

Marathon Development Update

Marathon was slated to launch on Sept. 23, 2025 across Xbox, PC, and PlayStation, but Bungie will share the new release date in the fall.

Jin_Sakai3d ago

Probably best just cancel it. The game has flop written all over it.

-Foxtrot3d ago

Yeah, you can delay it as much as you want but you ain’t gonna wash that stink off.

Killer2020UK3d ago

It will lessen though and possibly make all the difference if it launches in a state that rectified a lot of the issues people had with it. A LOT of ifs of course.

RaidenBlack3d ago

If you really gotta play ... play the better extraction shooter this year : ARC Raiders

ZeekQuattro3d ago

Delaying the inevitable. Bungie hoping the negative publicity will blow over. 🙄

darthv723d ago

They can't cancel it until a themed controller has been released first... like concord.

ZeekQuattro3d ago

I anxiously wait for that and a Marathon Secret Level episode.

GamingManiac2d ago

$10 says it'll have the stolen artwork on it lolol

dveio3d ago

If they were absolutely certain about the quality of Marathon, then they had not delayed it just now.

So they've basically just confirmed what everyone, well, a lot of people saw: Marathon is not ready yet, still no soul to be seen.

Tacoboto3d ago

"Doubling down on the Marathon Universe"

They're doubling down on soul, thank goodness this feedback illuminated that for them...

RaidenBlack3d ago

and N4G was littered with comments like : Marathon looks really good, maybe you're a hater and the likes blah blah ... especially under articles which compared it with Arc Raiders ....

"Everything Happening To Bungie Is Because of Greed" -ex-employees

Ex- employees Hope Studio Gets "Consolidated Into Sony"

Former Bungie employees speak out in a new report, blaming greed and leadership for the studio’s troubles, and say full Sony consolidation is the best way forward.

Interesting article, even with some actual names of the people voicing their thoughts.

I think that we've had enough similiar situations at other studios and publishers already, hell even completely different businesses, to know that OF COURSE it's always about hostile environments at work and the search for rather effortless profits than causing excitment with great ideas.

All deflecting statements, wether from managements or other people in charge, have always, literally always been untruthful. Always.

And it's so silly.

Nothing of this crap causes a nuclear war.

But all the people in charge act like everything is top secret f'n CIA like intel, trying everything to not stand up for their mistakes.

I mean it's pathetic, it really is. In the brand scheme of it all it's truly pathetic.

robtion28d ago

Let me just fix this:

'Everything Bad Happening in 'The world' Is Because of Greed'

Bravo captain obvious.

Obscure_Observer29d ago

All of sudden consolidation is now a good thing.

Eonjay29d ago

Right I actually agree with you here. Something doesnt' seem right almost like Sony wants them to look bad because it is trying to takeover. I can't figure out Sony's intentions here but they are already wholely owned so full consolidation means that they can bring in their own management. And honestly this is probably NOT what Bungie wanted.

Obscure_Observer29d ago

"Well the obvious answer to that is that it kinda looks like Bungie is getting torn to shreds without Sony's help. And clearly there is no way Sony is going to spend all that money and not step in to help steady the ship at Bungie because that would be a huge wasted investment."

Exactly!

Phil allowed Pete Hines to run the show at Bethesda and we got Redfall as result. Now that he´s gone and Bethesda reports directly to Matt Booty at XGS, things are definitely getting better!

It´s past time to Sony to take over Bungie and fire that POS Pete Parsons.

-Foxtrot29d ago

Sony has literally given these guys chance after chance, they gave them an extra BILLION to try and keep talent along with telling them to sort their s**t out

What else can they do here? They gave them free reign, extra money and they've spat in their faces.

If they took full control when they bought them they might have been able to salvage them.

TheColbertinator29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Bungie will be torn to shreds with Sony in full control. Another addition to the cemetery like Zipper or Sony Liverpool

Eonjay29d ago

Well the obvious answer to that is that it kinda looks like Bungie is getting torn to shreds without Sony's help. And clearly there is no way Sony is going to spend all that money and not step in to help steady the ship at Bungie because that would be a huge wasted investment.

MrBeatdown29d ago

Whatever mental gymnastics you just went through must be exhausting.

It sounds like you have some baggage from Microsoft's acquisition spree.

SimpleDad29d ago

Bungie was indie, so they depended on in game monetization. Sony makes money from other sources: music, movies, psn, ps hardware...

...so devs are hoping by full Sony consolidation they will cut down the monetization part, and make things easier for them...

...but keep in mind, Sony bought them because of their monetization and live service model and design, so much so they tried to make every Sony IP into a live service spinoff.

So I don't see much change in anything, for us consumers, if Sony takes full control.

Michiel198928d ago

i don't think you know what the word Indie means. Bungie has be under the hood of MS for a long time and basically were under the actiblizz hood while they were making Destiny. They are one of the biggest AAA studios, the polar opposite of indie. Technically they weren't owned, but they made deals with Acti like they were. Indie refers to smaller independent studios and don't need in game monetization at all to work. Hades for example has 0 ingame purchase options yet made a lot of money.

It’s Just Over For ‘Marathon’

Marathon has always been teetered on the edge of future failure, but now that seems set in stone after recent events.

CrashMania32d ago

Paul Tassi is a known xbox/MS stooge.

Saying that, Marathon looks so meh to me, absolutely no interest at all.

JEECE32d ago

Once he wrote an article characterizing Horizon Forbidden West, which came out over a year after the PS5 released, as a PS5 "launch game." Assuming this was just a mistake, I pointed out to him that "launch games" for a console are widely understood to be the games that come out on the day of a console's launch or in the immediate window thereafter. He responded and told me that he understood "launch game" to mean a game that launches, which would mean that every game that releases on a console is a "launch game" for that console.

I've basically ignored everything he has said since then. But I don't care about Marathon either way; playing Hunt: Showdown turned me off this genre pretty much.

Killer2020UK31d ago

He sounds like a stubborn moron

babadivad31d ago

If I was running Sony why would I not try to have bungie reboot Killzone and have it as their Halo. Honestly I don't know how Sony could justify that 3.6 billion purchase price. Insomniac games at 256 million has been their greatest acquisition in Playstation history for what they have already delivered and what's the pipeline

Profchaos32d ago

The smart money would have given them killzone but they brought them to be a pillar of their live services investment and seeming have no interest in allowing them near a single player story driven game again.

Lightning7731d ago

The bigger mistake imo is not having them do any SP projects. Just all LS stuff.

Also want to clear up some misinformation on my part about Marathon. It wasn't due to creative differences as to why Jade left it was due to early internal Play tests were reportedly not received very well. Which probably prompted her to leave. My fault on that.

Ghostwood32d ago

It does look like ass shit.

Would pulling the plug now make any difference or is Bungie thoroughly cooked regardless?

peppeaccardo32d ago

Since when Forbes is relevant for the gaming community?

Profchaos31d ago
